Insightful article on the London riots and American Grace

The Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth, Lord Jonathan Sacks, published a thoughtful essay in the Wall Street Journal today, 20 August 2011, in which he goes to the heart of the London riots and the West’s problems from the

“tsunami of wishful thinking that washed across the West saying that you can have sex without the responsibility of marriage, children without the responsibility of parenthood, social order without the responsibility of citizenship, liberty without the responsibility of morality and self-esteem without the responsibility of work and earned achievement.

What has happened morally in the West is what has happened financially as well. Good and otherwise sensible people were persuaded that you could spend more than you earn, incur debt at unprecedented levels and consume the world’s resources without thinking about who will pay the bill and when. It has been the culture of the free lunch in a world where there are no free lunches.

This should be posted in classrooms, boardrooms, church offices, and anywhere else where it can make an impact. Read the whole thing at

And by all means, forward this around instead of inane s0-called prayers that can’t be broken and the other nonsense that floods inboxes these days. This cuts to the heart of the matter, for the USA as much as the UK. And be sure to read to the end – the insight of a Chinese Communist is going to knock your socks off.
